Guitar is hard to get into because it’s very frustrating. But once you’re in, you’re in. Your best bet, is just to go down to Guitar Center if you have one near you. If not, Amazon.com is a good place, my buddy got a guitar and amp for around $140 and his is pretty good for the price he got it at.
Fender Squier is a good beginning guitar.
I think TR has it about right (although I don’t know anyone who has ever gotten CTS from playing the guitar). The point is that for a beginner the guitar has to be comfortable to play, otherwise it will just gather dust under the bed. “Comfort” in this sense has mostly to do with the left hand (assuming a righty player). The strings should not be so high off of the frets that they are difficult/painful to push down. The height of the strings above the frets/fingerboard is referred to as “the action”. The lower the action (without the strings buzzing) the easier the instrument will be to play, and the more likely is is to be learned
um first of all u should look for a good brand ah gibson is a very good brand but it might be very costly as its branded if u get a non-branded one then it might cost less um buy a gud colour which your son likes and ya u can learn the guitar online there are online lessons for guitar and even on youtube u find guitar lessons and see that the guitar you buy is tuned properly
First: you’ll probably want to start the boy on an acoustic guitar. Most players start on acoustic, and then they can switch to electric later.
To buy a good acoustic guitar, I would take the boy to a good music store and let him try out several guitars. Yes, he can’t really play yet, but have him hold them and try to press strings down onto the fingerboard and strum. He’ll be able to tell is the neck feels good in his left hand, and if his right arm is comfortable around the body, hand naturally touching the strings near the sound-hole. When he’s found a few guitars in your price range that feel good, have someone (even the sales clerk) play the same thing on each of them while your son’s back is turned. The one that sounds best to him then is the one to buy.
For a beginner guitarist, I strongly recommend a dozen or so lessons, at least, from a good teacher. Guitar is a little bit different from mouth organ or even keyboards in that there are a lot of things that can go wrong with the wrists if you don’t learn proper finger placement and position for both hands. I’ve known quite a few self-taught guitarists who wound up needing carpal tunnel surgery–some quite young at the time. Now, after a dozen or so lessons, your boy should have his basic technique right, and then he can study from websites, youtube videos, books, and recordings–and from watching and sharing with other guitarists.
