It depends on what kind of Guitar your getting. It's either an electric or acoustic guitar. An acoustic guitar is a normal regular guitar and an electric guitar is a guitar that uses electricity and the tone can be changed if you buy a pedal and a amp. But yeah you can buy it off ebay, amazon or guitar websites sometimes offer online shopping.

I would not buy from ebay unless you think you can return it, and if so by the time you are paying for shipping you probably could buy local.
I would also disagree a bit with chessmaster. I don't think people can sit down at a store, play a guitar and go 'oh, I like that'. It is likely you will just buy the guitar with best strings, or the one that has been set up right. Or, you may just like the salesman. I would do research on the best guitar, then go to the stores, then only try the ones with good strings. Try to get as much solid wood as possible. I believe there is a solid wood top epiphone or alverez for $99 at Guitar Center. Hopefully, you'll want to spend about 300.
When you find the guitar you like, then go to Craigslist and check out the guitar before you buy. You can get some good acoustic deals from CL. But make sure you just get the guitars you research since it is a hassle driving all over town.

I can't say this enough do not buy guitars from E-bay, your going to get what you pay for, a few months ago there was one for a penny, yes I said a penny, can you imagine what that sounded like. Why not go to a local guitar store like the Guitar Center, they have a great acoustic Yamaha for under $200.00 and on sale even less, and their great with deals just ask and they'll reduce the price, some stores have guitars second hand, why not look at some of those. The point is that you shouldn't buy a guitar without first playing and hearing it, everyone likes a different sound and feel, the action may be too high for you or you might not like the sound, if you can't play it get one of the clerks to play it for you, and keep doing that until you find one that you like the sound of and then try to finger it to make sure that those strings aren't too high. They have Little rooms in most stores where you can go to try the instruments, some people feel embarrassed because they can't play, just try and push down the strings and make sure it has a clear sound and isn't too hard to do !!!!!! Hope this helped some, bye !!!!!
