You have to decide which feels right for you, a heavier guitar like a les Paul or a piece of air like a strat (personally I think fenders are terrible), also the shape, how it fits to you, and how the fret board feels. You should go around guitar shops and try them, what feels good under your fingers and a more natural feel, the feel of the guitar is important. Tone comes from the pickups so plug it in as well, try the different settings and different amps to make sure you’re not just listening to the amp.
What sort of music you want to play is also a factor to some degree as well. What sort of sound are you after? You really need to spend some days just going around guitar shops trying different guitars until you find what you want. Some guitars lean towards a certain style, my Ibanez makes me want to play really meaty riffs and hard rock (they’re also good for speed playing) but my Les Paul gives me a nice blues vibe and is good for playing rhythm as well, Gretsch guitars give a great feel and sound for something like ballads or Jazz, Strats have that 50′s/ 60′s American diner vibe and are as light as air, rather horrible on the top end but great if that’s what you want. If you want to learn to speed play then you want something with a low action (strings close to the fret board) like an Ibanez, but you might want a high action guitar depending on what you’re after
As for price, it depends what you get.
There are starter packs that are dirt cheap, but if you want to take up guitar properly then you’ll only be getting rid of these soon after getting them anyway, but if you just want to have a guitar for having one then yeh go for a starter pack from Argos or summit
Which one you want depends on you, it’s a bit like an extension of your personality.
Hey,
Okay when you look at the guitar it should be about $300 if you are getting a decent starter. You also should play it a few times! When you hit the strings with no amp it should not make a steely sound! Also check that the strings are not too high off the fret board. You also want to decide on what type of guitar you want. Since you are just starting, I am assuming that you will get a Fender Stratocaster.

All the info. for it is on this site.
You may want to try a Gibson SG. They are good guitars, you will see many rockers (such as AC/DC!) use them. Here is the info.

As for amps I reccomend a line six amp for $99 or marshall. I prefer line six prices.
Good Luck!!
Try http://www.guitarcenter.com, go under electric guitars, then value packs. I have the $279 Fender Stop Dreaming Start Playing one, and it is a really good guitar. It also comes with the amp, picks, tuner, case, and a couple other things. I bought it because I was on a tight budget and it was my first guitar (I played on my friend’s before that). I use it for my band. It is quite low quality recording, but it sounds good. You don’t need a really fancy guitar, especially for punk/hardcore, which I play. It is bare bones, but it is cheap and reliable.
If your just learning, dont buy anything too expensive.
You can get packs, with the guitar and amp, plectrums, strap etc.
About £150 ish.
The tone should sound good.
